This week’s #FloodlightFriday caper comes to you from the still active Leeds stalwart, The Square Ball. This is from some time ago though, season 1992-93 issue 2 (get that numbering system sorted out lads, it’s RIDICULOUS).

A two page spread in an A4 fanzine (Fear not, they moved to the less ridiculous A5 format some time ago) explains the somewhat haphazard development of floodlights at Elland Road plus the dazzling effect the lights had on the whole city. It is rumoured those near the ground save hundreds of pounds when United were at home though not having to feed the meter. Despite the Beatles connection the movement of shadows from 2 stands to just 1 is to be welcomed as is the tactical advantage over Wimbledon and the boost to whoever came before Sunglasses Hut (I looked it up and they didn’t arrive in the UK to 1994 and so unless I’m badly misreading the TSB numbering system…anyway, you get the point.)

Above is a picture of the old pylons to give you an idea of just how ridiculously tall they were and below is the ground as it is today with the hastily added 2020 bendy floodlights behind the west stand that had to be added to meet Sky TV’s requirements as Leeds returned to the premier league and which will themselves now be removed with the recently approved ground redevelopment.
