As St Totteringham’s day is upon us again I thought I’d travel back to happier times at White Hart Lane but that is never as simple as you’d think. With that title perhaps I didn’t really need to explain that it was a Spurs fanzine, anyway, issue 3 of One Flew Over Seaman’s Head appeared in September 1997 just as a new season and Tonty Bliar strode into view. Reasons to be cheerful? Well no, apparently not.

The editorial and just about all of the first half of the fanzine bemoan the transfer policy, Alan Sugar, fan group bust ups and all manner of other ailments..plus the news that Bill Nicholson has FINALLY retired. Still, there is a fetching cartoon of David Seaman. For background I looked at the list of Tottenham managers around this time…. Gerry Francis, Chris Hughton, Christian Gross, David Pleat and George Graham…YIKES!

Even the pre season friendlies haven’t helped and it’s not really hard to see why. No tours of America or Asia in these days, it’s strictly gruel at Brisbane Road and Vicarage Road plus the glamour of the County Ground. The full horror of 90s pre season with half baked teams, Ramon Vega losing his head, David Howells and bringing home the Bill Halsey Memorial Cup are not joy inducing memories, even then. The Heaven and Hell cartoon IS still valid today however.

Such is the gloom at Spurs our heroes are trying to find succour from Tony and his Britpop days hoving in to view. It WAS a time of great hope, britpop or otherwise and this is dedicated work, analysing how Tottenham have done under various post war governments…only to find that they are better off under the tories wrt success…There would be 2 League cups under new Labour but my god, how depressing it must have been to discover this.

There are some quotes which MIGHT be made up, you be the ref.

There is much Arsenal baiting as you would expect, run of the mill stuff except this rather startling centre spread cartoon showing the likes of Ian Walker beheading Arsene Wenger..Ian never seemed to be the type tbh, more Hanson than Hannibal but well, it’s very creative I suppose.

If I had a time machine I’d go back and tell the lads to cheer up because by 2026 Spurs would be a stable well run club that had won a European trophy in 2025 before romping to the Premier league title in 202…Oh, hold on.
