Today’s #FanzineoftheDay comes from the footballing outpost that was Scarborough FC, issue 5 of The Scarborough Warning appeared in May 1991 (we think, there is no date anywhere). The mighty fine cover mimics the club crest with a much better moto and reveals the fanzine address as being The Duchess Pub. Great stuff.

As an aside LSM (Life Support Machine) the magnificent fanzine for Caledonian FC also had it’s address in a pub, more specifically, the public bar of the Muirtown Motel. If you know of any others let me know.

The editorial goes long on a disappointing season. Tbh it was about the best the club would achieve in their 12 year league sojourn, finishing just outside the playoffs in 9th and of course all boro fans would snap your hand off to be back there nowadays. The editorial dows give a good explanation of the different ways fanzines approached their task however and 24 pages of tight engaging text like this suggest some of the buyers didn’t really know what they were talking about. The arrival of RL the next season didn’t do much for the club finances.

The Local lads made good is interesting as is the appearance of Tommy Mooney this season…Scarborough would sell him to Southend for £100,000 in 1993.
There is news of a days holiday take and a 7 hour, 350 mile journey to Torquay for an evening KO cancelled at…6pm. These were the days when pitches and late pitch inspections were just another way clubs held fans in contempt.

This being a Scarborough fanzine the fish and chips available in a visiting town get the once over and it’s not good. Mick Clarke might argue that his was the worst misfortune but I’m not sure our correspondent would agree having eaten ‘fish’ that had been “mainlining raw sewage”. For more on the fanzine-food nexus you can read last week’s blog here. https://footballfanzineculture.blog/2026/04/02/masterchef-the-fanzines/

Possibly related there is a piece called ‘Tales From The Small Room’ which will be all too familiar for people who went to grounds in the 80s and 90s.

Finally I’ll include just 2 of the many magnificent adverts in the zine. I suspect these may have been rather cheap to place IF you let the lads at the fanzine write them for you.

Great fanzine, packed with well written pieces, rants, cartoons and heavy on the sarcasm. Much more to go at and we will return to this one later.
