Issue 9 of the rather splendid long running Shrewsbury fanzine A Large Scotch came out around April time in 1991. It was a “relegation special” issue but we’re using it for #FloodlightFriday purposes today.

At the time it looked like the Shrews would go down but a remarkable run of 3 wins in May would see them rocket up the table to finish 18th in the old 3rd division including such luminaries as Bournemouth and Fulham.

There isn’t too much to say about this article except that it is brilliant, the story of a dreadful season writ large by two and a half ‘match reports’ all defeats. In a very short space it contains

  • Torn knee ligaments in 1982
  • An impressive Micky Burton who would play 6 times for Shrewsbury to make a sum total of 10 league appearances (4 for Birmingham) before dropping to non league with Moor Green, Solihull Borough (does that count as one club – Ed?) Bromsgrove and Redditch.
  • A bittersweet day in Exeter
  • An absolute thumping by relegation rivals Fulham, by which time our correspondent can’t be bothered with more than 2 words

But of course we’re here for a classic fanzine standard photo of a lost ground, the absolute shed that was Leeds Road in Huddersfield. ‘Happy’ memories of a ground that was about to fall down when they pulled it down..Leeds Road survived fire, two floodlight pylons being blown down in a gale and wiki tells me ‘had a pioneering role in the adoption of CCTV at grounds up and down the country, a notorious riot involving Leeds United hooligans leading to the first conviction in a British court using video footage.’

There is another extraordinary story including floodlights in this issue of ALS, see you next week for that.
