The quality of the cover of today’s #FOTD Here We Go Again issue 4, a Bolton fanzine from early 1992 gives notice that this is a quality production. Great logo, impressive satirical cartoons and news of a free gift.

The pages inside are packed and all for £1 but before we even get to that behold the superbly drawn and executed Dr Doolitle cartoon on the back cover taking the mickey out of friends and neighbours at Old Trafford. Lovely stuff.

The editorial is standard but well written fare, a plea for contributions has worked, a claim that the club do read the views within, a scaled back gift, the call for a good run from the team even if that includes a loss at home to Brighton. Finally there is a warning to the Julian Darby fan club, great editor pic.

There is a tremendous article which is basically an apology for some libelous content in previous issues but you’ll have to wait until Thursday and this week’s blog to see that when we’ll talk about Fanzines, Newspapers and “Publicity”

The warning to the Julian Dary fan club quickly becomes a little bit more with a poll on whether or not you could play in Bolton’s midfield. Darby scored 36 goals for the Wanderers in 270 appearances. The fact that he scored in the 1989 Associate Members Cup final, where Bolton beat Torquay 4–1 at Wembley holds no water with our correspondents.

There is something of an oddity for a fanzine which shows its age; a review of the cassette version of a radio show. I must admit that I had forgotten about ‘Lenin’ but do remember it being pretty good at the time. I know I’m showing my age by admitting to listening to radio shows but there you go. I did a bit of digging and a cast including Alexei Sayle, Phil Cornwell, John Sessions, Keith Allen, Jim Broadbent and the legendary Kenneth Wolstenholme can’t have been all bad. This WSC review certainly agrees with HWGA recommending a trip down to Bolton Central Library. https://www.wsc.co.uk/the-archive/radio-revolution/

There is a superb cartoon with a compelling theory as to the origions of football and many of its terms. I’ll be sending the off to various historical societies, The FA, FIFA and The British Library forthwith.

Finaly for now we return to Darby hating with another Jules appreciation piece, Jules II (styles like the poster for Rocky? for some reason, maybe they liked the film..)

Tememndous fanzine, we’re only half way through it and so reserve the right to retun for more great capers later. In the meantime there is an excellent resource about Wanderers fanzines online here, including the story of how HWGA became White Love. https://www.whitelove.co.uk/history
