This week’s crystal clear photo of a floodlight comes to you from the winter of 1990 and the fanzine for “groovy West Ham fans everywhere” Never Mind The Boleyn issue 4

A great little fanzine, promise of Gorby and Kinnock on the cover might give you a clue about political leanings and there are really great articles about other sports, book reviews and some great cartoons..I’ll tell you more soon.

Floodlights? Well, 3 out of 4 ain’t bad as Meat Loaf possibly sang although admittedly one pylon is hidden in this hideous black and white copy of a photo. Let’s just agree it’s there, twice.

In the days before drones I can only assume this was taken from a hi rise somewhere in the area. I’ve actually found the original photo online and that JUST confirms that actually the photo if it hadn’t been cropped and copied so hideously has all 4 floodlights on it and just what a monstrosity Upton Park was at the time.

There also appears to be a game of football taking place in the shadow of the ground…the academy perhaps? Joe Cole is from that era, maybe even Frank Lampard..we can but guess. Anyway, this is a spoof piece bemoaning the lack of progress at the stadium for fans, and disabled fans especially. It seems mind boggling that “community club” West Ham had not only no disabled access in 1990 but no plans for it either.

The clubs solution to a slow flow of fans through the turnstiles is a classic…increase prices to remove the need for change. There’s that community spirit once again. Anyway, there are DEFINITLEY floodlights.
